Everyone exists in the cultures that exist in their immediate environment. <span style="font-family: "arial";">The political environment is only one aspect of culture. There
<span style="font-family: "arial";">are many other important elements to <span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">consider that make up
<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">a culture.
<span style="font-family: "arial";">While a culture is made up of many many elements and many
<span style="font-family: "arial";"> individuals within a culture, individuals can and should
<span style="font-family: "arial";">examine <span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">the cultural accepted norms in there culture.
<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">Individuals can
<span style="font-family: "arial";">then decide if the prevalent norms work for oneself’s best
<span style="font-family: "arial";">interests and lead to one’s best quality of life. <span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">If the cultural
norms are not working for oneself and the critical mass in
<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">directions that create <span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">negative aspects towards cultural
<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">time to <span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">make <span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">your own choices that will structure your
<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">cultural <span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">environment <span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">as best as possible.

<span style="font-family: "arial";">As I have initiated work on this project what has become
<span style="font-family: "arial";">and is <span style="font-family: "arial";">most evident through the research I have <span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">done is
<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">cultural decline <span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">is a barometer of a combination of multiple
<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">cultures that we as <span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">individuals are part <span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">of. For example we
<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">are part of a national culture <span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">so what is it ?, what has it been
<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">in the past ?, what does <span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">the future <span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">national look like ?.
<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">Thinking of State and local cultures is also a <span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">worthwhile
<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">consideration.
<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">

<span style="font-family: "arial";">As one thinks deeply about the cultures they live in and how
<span style="font-family: "arial";">they <span style="font-family: "arial";">have been and are presently affected by <span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">those cultures,
<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">then you <span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">will see how much the overall cultures narrow down
<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">to the effect on <span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">an individual. <span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">Most importantly then how by
<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">critical thinking about <span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">one’s culture and making thoughtful
<span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">choices one can <span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">work to define <span style="font-family: "arial"; font-size: 14.6667px; white-space: pre;">their own best culture.

If you are happy with the culture you are presently living then great!, take note and understand what brings you personal satisfaction and a sense of well being and happiness and why so. Doing so serves as a foundation that in the event conditions change perhaps to a less than desirable circumstance you will have a clear understanding of what the “good old days” meant to oneself.

Its purpose is to assist you in choosing cultural elements and structuring your own culture as best as possible for oneself and in the case of parents a nurturing lifestyle for your children,

Many are lacking in confidence in future wellbeing.
While the Federal budget is proposed and not passed as of yet the Trump administration's intentions are not good for the arts and humanities.

Federal funding of Arts and the Humanities are on a list the Trump administration wants to outright eliminate including; The National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Institute of Museum and Library Services, and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

For those who understand the vital role the arts and humanities provide in the nurturing of a healthy society. The profound benefits to our culture are immeasurable. The news is more than disconcerting.

While the cuts are uncertain the only thing that is certain is uncertainty about one's prosperity and well being in the future for so many it is an ongoing and increasingly prevailing daily concern.

So what's the solution?
On a Federal level it a "wait and see" situation. Citizens and political leaders of all parties are extremely concerned and upset with the intentions directed towards the arts and humanities. With so many organizations and political leaders addressing the issues there may or may not be a reasonable compromise On a personal and community level there can and should be a concerted effort to engage, support and share in the humanities.

My challenge to others and the actions I am personally putting forth is: " What are we personally serving up to strengthen our society our families and ourselves?"

Please feel free to attend one of my FREE community art classes

So why are the arts and humanaites so important?

Here art 9 reasons (from Curt Rice website, http://curt-rice.com/2014/02/25/here-are-9-reasons-why-humanities-matter-whats-your-number-10/
<dir>
<dir>
The humanities help us understand others through their languages, histories and cultures.
They foster social justice and equality.
And they reveal how people have tried to make moral, spiritual and intellectual sense of the world.
The humanities teach empathy.
They teach us to deal critically and logically with subjective, complex, imperfect information.
And they teach us to weigh evidence skeptically and consider more than one side of every question.
Humanities students build skills in writing and critical reading.
The humanities encourage us to think creatively. They teach us to reason about being human and to ask questions about our world.
The humanities develop informed and critical citizens. Without the humanities, democracy could not flourish.</dir>

Plein Air classes

All plein air classes will be based on art as an integral part of life. The classes are for artists and non artists alike. The classes are based on a reflection of the past and will create a sense of present adventure.

Instruction provided for the student will assist the student to create their own artistic journey of incorporating art and recreation. Best stated the intent and purpose is to develop a holistic incorporation of creativity into one's lifestyle.

The plein air experience:
The idea is, pre photography images of places and things were only experienced either first hand or by viewing drawings and paintings. Many early images of the American landscapes were created by artists accompanying government survey crews as the maped the American west.

The artists were explorers and travelers as well as painters. So students taking part in the plein air experiences will be taught how to create their own adventures by creating images throughout their travels. The thought and opportunity of travel and exploration will vary greatly for each individual. For some the opportunity for distant travel may be possible. For many though travel and exploration will be enjoyed closer to home. It is the close to home exploration that we will develop in the classes and workshops. The focus will be incorporating art into a daily lifestyle. And the opportunities for creating art in our Wasatch front are endless.

Adult class
Guardian and Child art class,

Keeping a sketchbook, Summer art activity for both adults and children,

This class is unique because it engages the student in daily interactivity followed up and supported by a weekly class gathering.

This class instructs how to have a daily activity for both students and guardians to enjoy all summer. The fundamentals will be taught and then the students will create work throughout the week to bring to the next class for discussion and personal assistance. Each week techniques will be demonstrated. The key purpose is for the individual to have a daily activity to enjoy and a group to then engage with each week. This informal class will provide a structure for individuals to make friends and form relationships with others of like mind regardless of age and or ability.

The class will be held outside weather permitting and when necessary indoors for demonstrations and studio work.

About the class:

It was the concept of painting outdoors with a group of friends capturing images of common life breaking away from the societal accepted norms, the polished works of art of aristocrats kings queens and political and business leaders that launched the plein air movement in Paris in 1860.

The impressionist movement and Its originators were artists who rejected the official, government-sanctioned exhibitions, or salons

The Impressionists started as a small group of friends who aimed to capture the momentary, sensory effect of a scene - the impression objects made on the eye in a fleeting instant. To achieve this effect, many Impressionist artists moved from the studio to the streets and countryside, painting en plein air.

They were not accepted by the mainstream art establishment but soon began having their own art shows and making art history.

So the question is what will you make your adventure and own personal art experience?

Rather than discussing the personal reasons for the long delay in blog posts I want to get going on the things that are happening that hopefully are of importance and value to you and your family.

With many area of interests being worked on one of my most passionate areas of interest in modeling the role of art in these most critical times is that of what's going on in the education system.

With STEM (STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math education. ) being a huge focus in national education goals I would like to offer some thoughts on STEM and the movement to turn STEM into STEAM. (STEAM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering Art and Math education

My personal thought on STEM has been that there is a very fundamental element of STEM model that is missing. With lots of study and research I found that I am not alone and other individuals in different organizations feel the same way.

So the missing fundamental is ART, including the many disciplines of art, visual, music, dance, sculpture crafts etc.

Those of us adding the "A" to the model are not arguing against STEM but want to see the model more balanced.

In thinking of an example of a master of STEAM education and life application I can think of no better example than Leonardo da Vinci. Truly a master at integrating science, technology engineering, art and math.

In study after study over decades of examples it has been found where schools have good arts programs the other areas of education also excel. Ultimately it is up to individuals to choose their own balance and for parents to assist their children in doing so. It is my sincere desire to share with parents and youth ways to integrate the "A" into custom tailoring an education model that is best for the individual and to also create lifelong activities to enrich one's own best holistic lifestyle.

I do not believe there is one set way to integrate the "A" into one's lifestyle and education but see more opportunities than one could possibly participate in. There are some basic fundamentals that can form a basis for further exploration and development.

Thinking back to my own childhood and that of my own children I could only think of how visual education began. Teaching a child math usually began with showing the child an image of say apples and adding or taking away. The numerical symbols meant little to the child but the apples sure did. As we progress to adulthood we use text and audible information at a great level to learn and communicate much more than the visual representation used as a child.

Going back to the child, were not the deepest thoughts of a child drawn out through a child making a drawing or painting and then explaining what the he or her was thinking

While looking at the drawing and showing it to we parents?

My point in discussing children's use of visual art in learning is not to redundantly discuss what you already know but to lay a foundation for one of the life enriching activities I promote to individuals of all ages.

My number one "A" activity is to incorporate visual art into all areas of interest, concerns and problem solving. I promise you in presenting information and telling a story be it a favorite movie or a serious documentary on the federal deficit before a word is spoken or a frame of video of video or film is shot, a visual storyboard is developed.

So then my number one " A" activity is to keep and develop a sketchbook. My personal goal and objective in keeping a sketchbook is to first have fun and enjoy doing so. To use it as a means to capture a moment and disconnect from the pace of the day. To record a thought needed in the present or safely stored for future reference.

One Month of Art Classes
Keeping a Sketchbook
(Adult) ages 16 and above)

This class is purposed to teach an individual more than how to keep a sketchbook. Most importantly it is a method to help individuals find and take a few minutes each day to disconnect from their routine and find their creative mind set if only for a few minutes.

Keeping a sketchbook is an amazing tool for looking back and remembering pleasant moments and better managing the not so pleasant moments. A glimpse of a sketch can amazingly take one back to remembering the exact moment and the day the image was created.

Sketching can be a form of art therapy that quiets your left brain while allowing your right brain to express itself. This act can lead to a relaxing, meditative state.

Sketching daily will sharpen your observational skills. Your sketchbook Offers a relaxing and informal place in which to work. Your sketchbook is your private oasis, their is no right or wrong and their are no expectations of a polished work of art. It is the process that is important.

The classes include the first week in the studio reviewing and experimenting with various mediums. The next three classes will be at various locations in SLC. All locations will be easily accessible by Trax or bus.

A materials list will be provided and students may purchase their own supplies
I am proud to Announce two new workshops to be held at Pioneer Craft House in South Salt Lake City. The workshops will lay the groundwork for open studio opportunities to work on your own projects. I will be teaching the workshops and mentoring students in open studio project classes.

"Art for the Entrepreneur" is an overview of how to make visual content for your social and content marketing needs. We will discuss the foundation for creating a plan and then setup some examples to photograph and demonstrate different lighting techniques for photography and videography. Those who need creative companionship and mentoring and who want and need a space to work on creating their own content can continue with our open studio opportunities.
The "Art for the Entrepreneur" project is in its infancy and is already gaining momentum. This is the only opportunity in the Salt Lake Valley I know of that is focused on bringing out the artist in the business man or woman. The project is sponsored in part by Pioneer Craft House a ZAP funded organization. To outreach to local artisans and businesses we are working with South Salt Lake Arts Counsel and the chamber of commerce.
As the project advances we will be bringing in social marketing experts in content writing, and social marketing platforms including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. The project is already linking individuals and businesses with each other as well as web audiences.

"ART Sampler Workshop"
To introduce our new open studio art classes, we are offering this workshop to assist individuals in identifying what art experience one might enjoy the most.
Do you need creative companionship or mentoring to develop your own artistic style? And a place to come work on your project? Then this workshop and Pioneer Craft house is for you.
Open studio opportunities include:
Drawing and painting
Oil and Acrylic painting
Sculpture
Digital "Hands On" photography

Both workshops are being scheduled as well as the open studio classes.
So what does modeling the role mean on an individual basis? At the core of the initiative is the desire to assist others, many others to increase their participation and enjoyment of the creative process. It is believed that exceptional creative thinking will be required in coping with the complex lifestyles of a new post 2006 economy.

While government funding for many art programs remain flat or will see additional budget cuts the opportunity for personal creative endeavors has never been alive with more possibilities.

So what is creativity? And how can we personally increase our creativity and the application thereof?

The aspect of creativity that wasatchart blog encourages is that of actively creating or more simply stated building something. While building something usually is defined by a specific purpose or outcome. Creativity is not bounded by a successful finished result. Creating or building something is often experimentation in examining the processes and elements that formulate a finished product idea or concept. Often the finished result is finding what works what does not work and results in stimulus of new ideas or concepts. It is the enjoyment of the process that is most paramount in achieving personal satisfaction.

Taking charge of your own creativity can be as simple and as important as just taking a few moments for ones self. Since wasatchart blog is centered around the visual arts the encouragement is to make some sketches of thoughts, ideas, objects or urban and rural scenes of interest.Kenneth Lundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15065932479169200625noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4637834131536596354.post-87655788979523323742010-03-05T10:50:00.000-08:002010-03-06T09:19:45.407-08:00State of the Arts 2010With art there is hope for 2010.
Hope for what?
Hope that on an individual basis despite of or regardless of ones own socioeconomic status that ones own personal enrichment and recreational opportunities can be pursued developed and enjoyed.

Hope for others to achieve individual replenishment and fulfillment, that the health, well being and functionality of individuals will foster healthy community and benefit the society in whole.

Hope that participation in the arts will both enrich individuals and foster awareness for the value of the arts in our developing culture.

With the current economic conditions prevailing in 2010 funding for the arts is chaotic at best. Endowments from government and private organizations and funds generated from individuals are significantly down.

The arts were not totally ignored in the recent government economic stimulus package. Funds were allocated to the National Endowment for the Arts and have provided some assistance to arts organizations. Future endowments remain in question as local, state and federal tax bases are experiencing deeper and deeper budget cuts. Many long time arts organizations have had to cease existence.

Art in the last depression
In 1933 and 1934, during the period of "The Great Depression," the Federal government's Public Works of Art Project (PWAP) was organized by the Civil Works Administration. The general purpose of the program was "to give work to artists by arranging to have competent representatives of the profession embellish public buildings." This program lasted less than one year, yet it provided employment for approximately 3,700 artists who created nearly 15,000 works of art.
In 1935, a similar project, the Federal Art Project (FAP) was established by the Works Progress Administration (WPA). The Federal Art Project continued until 1943, when the beginning of World War II had changed economic priority to the war effort.
Many of the works profiled the conditions of “the day” profiling the work and initiatives that were taking place to sustain and stimulate the economy in the depression. There are still many of those works of art being enjoyed today. A Google image search will bring up several works to look at.
So where and what are the opportunities for furthering the arts in our culture going forward?
From my own personal perspective the greatest immediate opportunity for furthering the arts is to increase participation in the arts at a personal level. My enjoyment of the arts is mostly centered on the visual arts however I think ones interest can be increased in about any area of the arts that are ones personal interest.
How and why to increase you individual participation.
My purpose behind the establishment of this blog and my own personal example of how I use the arts for personal enrichment and recreation (http://easelbrushbus.blogspot.com/) is to assist individuals in identifying way to develop and pursue ones own enriching recreational opportunities.
Connect,
Connect with organizations that are in your area of interest. There are many organizations that have ongoing activities, often times free. Join and be a part of the organizations and look for opportunities to volunteer. In years past I have had the opportunity to volunteer and assist with art events at a local art center. I have enjoyed the experiences immensely. Meeting other artists and patrons attending the events has resulted in interesting conversations and ongoing relationships with other individuals of like interest.
Almost any area of interest in the arts has clubs that are prefect for sharing artistic information. Meeting regularly and socialization with others of like interests can build lasting friendships and have in many cases realized other benefits like networking when looking for a job etc.

The irony of the current economic situation is that it is not an entirely new situation. We have seen depressions and recessions in the past. The magnitude and scope of this current situation has its own intricacies both problematic and an opportunistic.
As art galleries close as performing arts organizations cut back performances or cease operation because of financial limitations The importance of the arts for many will shift to the value of the arts to meaning more so than monetary values.
The opportunity going forward through times of financial turmoil may see our view and use of the arts rise from an intrinsic enjoyment and appreciation of the arts to an elevated state, that of implementing and using personal participation in the arts as a dynamic tool we use for our own sustained physical, mental and emotional health.Kenneth Lundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15065932479169200625noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4637834131536596354.post-34669121168926386062009-12-14T13:17:00.000-08:002009-12-14T13:20:32.430-08:00The Need For Personal Replenishment Becomes GreaterTwo to three times a week I meet with three other business associates to informally discuss, brainstorm and strategize our future economic survival. Our group consists of a retail shop owner two independent artists and me an unemployed web developer.
Reflecting on the last few weeks of dialog I have come to visualize the bunch of us as some old, but not so old guys hanging out at the barber shop dissecting every idea and possibility for making a buck. The last several days though our quartet seems to be singing a tired song, tired of what seems to be a deepening lack luster economy. Tired of trying to hold ones own, struggling economically to hang on.
Other of my business associates outside the group that represent the auto industry, custom furniture and cabinet fabrication are also experiencing the same effects.
While the purpose of this post is not to be consumed with the negative the reality is evident that the current economic status is becoming a long term situation.
The Salt Lake Tribune the past month ran headliners stating that another 1,000 government jobs would be cut and recently that another 800 Aerospace jobs were also on the chopping block.
While the government figures for unemployment nationally are stated to be around the 10% area the real unemployment rate takes into consideration many factors including those who have exhausted their insurance benefits and those underemployed. A couple of links regarding the statistics are:
Fox Business news,
Brian Sullivan
http://briansullivan.blogs.foxbusiness.com/2009/11/06/is-the-real-unemployment-rate-17-5/
and the The US Dept of Labor, BLS
http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.t12.htm

Contemplating the voices of individuals tired by struggling and coping with economic uncertainty it is evident the need is becoming increasingly greater for individual replenishment. Replenishment being the foundation of recreation.
Looking at the situation on the positive side, the cup half full side, both the need and opportunity for personal replenishment is possible with and through increased participation in the arts.
The arts are being hit hard, really hard by the economic crisis. WSWS.org Has identified some of the effects in a most interesting article,
http://www.wsws.org/articles/2009/feb2009/cuts-f17.shtml
So opportunities for involvement in the arts will require individuals to they themselves take the initiative to create, participate and hopefully share with others,
In previous posts I have noted the positive social benefits of the arts. There are two free events that I recommend for stimulating interest in the visual arts and sculpting. Each month in Salt Lake City and also Park City there are Gallery stroll evening events. More than a stimulating look at a plethora of styles and subjects created by a diverse array of artists, the events are a opportunity to visit with some of the artists, gallery owners and staff and learn about their creative process.

Salt Lake Gallery Stroll
http://www.gallerystroll.org/

Park City Gallery Stroll
Hosted by the Kimball Art Center
http://www.kimballartcenter.org/

For my own personal replenishment this month I have been doing on location sketching throughout the city. I also have been doing some sketching in the Wendover Nevada area.
For more on how I integrate art as a part of outdoor recreation please visit my Blog An Easel A Brush & The Bus
http://www.easelbrushbus.blogspot.com/

Please also check out my page of classes workshops and free events
http://www.wasatchphoto.com/was-art/subpages/Workshops%20&%20Classes.htmKenneth Lundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15065932479169200625noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4637834131536596354.post-35246277477454513572009-10-13T20:20:00.000-07:002009-10-14T11:51:59.692-07:00Art, Unemployment and RecreationWow could I have selected a topic for this post with such a wide range of possibilities for discussion and or description?
Please bear with me on the subject of this post. While some of the disheartening aspects of unemployment are discussed There is good news and positive solutions for personal replenishment.

First the term "unemployment" is limited and perhaps a poorly descriptive term. At best a word used to describe the condition or situation of being disconnected from a job, from an employee employer arrangement.
I say poorly descriptive because while not being gainfully employed and receiving a once regular paycheck, one is consumed with the task and work of procuring a new job or making work suitable to adequately providing for the needs of ones family and oneself.
With so many individuals still at the time of this writing October 09, being added to the still nationally growing list of unemployed. A double digit figure and statistic.
The focus of this post.
My thoughts and concerns are for how those individuals, (a group that since August am a part of) are coping with the stress that accompanies unemployment.
Although my statistic classification is unemployed my daily routine has changed from performing tasks for an employer in exchange for a paycheck to conducting a job search and diligently finding or making work. Indeed a stressful and at times a disheartening proposition given the current state of the economy.
For those individuals also in this position my concern is that they will be able to afford and take part in recreational activities.
Recreational activities are more than a luxury. They are a necessity for mental and physical replenishment.
Most individuals that have become unemployed have to pull in the reigns on ancillary spending. Unfortunately often time this includes funds previously allocated for recreation. While funds for recreation may be reduced or curtailed the need for recreation really becomes more important than ever. The previous situation of employment most likely provided at least some level of continuity in ones life.
The need for replenishment provided by recreation is really important and can be even greater than when employed. Keeping morale up is curtailed to maintaining a positive outlook towards work and life.
The good news is that while recreation and entertainment budgets may be reduced or even non existent, art specifically sketching and keeping a sketchbook can provide a lot of recreation.
I practice, enjoy and instruct others in this most worthwhile activity. It’s an activity that provides physical exercise, aids greatly in mental thinking and clarity. A famous quote regarding art is that art is activities where you can both loose yourself find yourself. I have found this to be true, exceedingly true.
Taking your sketchbook and going afoot rewards the individual with the huge benefits of physical activity. Pausing to sketch your surroundings develops a more acute awareness of your environment.
Often individuals are amazed with how much pleasure and appreciation they develop for simply taking time to pause and explore the sometimes most simple things.
Best of all in financially good times or difficult times sketching requires little or no cost. I have instructed very financially successful individuals in sketching as an activity. One of the couples that participated in an outdoor workshop called me a few months after the workshop reporting that after a day’s business convention they forwent the usual evening social and took their sketchbooks and went sketching. They said it was one of the most pleasurable evenings they had spent in a long time.
My personal crusade is to instruct and share with others alternative recreational possibilities.
While ambling about sketching may seem a new thought many individuals in the U.S. and abroad take part in this growing form of recreation. It is also a perfect activity for group activities. Some individuals form groups and all meet and do sketches of a particular location.
My personal blog An Easel A Brush is an example of one of the ways I enjoy sketching as both outdoor and indoor recreation. Please check my news and events page often for upcoming activities and my classes and workshop pages for classes and workshops.
http://www.easelbrushbus.blogspot.com/Kenneth Lundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15065932479169200625noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4637834131536596354.post-57789856554307808902009-08-27T14:49:00.000-07:002009-08-27T14:59:19.207-07:00What Makes A Great Art EducationMy first formal art education began about 40 years ago in the 7th grade. My instructor the late Frank Erickson structured an educational art experience that for years I likened to a comprehensive university arts program. The last several years I have come to appreciate that the experience was a combination of a structured program with the addition of considerable personal mentoring.
Frank himself a student of the University of Utah and a student of Utah’s LeConte Stewart built an arts program unique to the public education system. Students were introduced to the triad system of mixing color. Many weeks were spent making water color paintings on 4” x 6” pieces of paper using specified combinations of the primary, secondary and tertiary colors. As students gained an understanding of the basics they were allowed and encouraged to move on to the joys of oil painting and sculpture.
Frank really went the distance in mentoring students in oil painting. He scrounged up wood pallets with the assistance of Jan Denbutter the schools custodial manager, also himself a superb and gifted artist. The pallets were hauled to Frank’s home where at the end of his driveway tirelessly he would rip the wood into stretcher bars for the students to use for stretching canvass for their oil paintings. He was always making note of the caution required to avoid those “damn nails”.
I can only imagine the hundreds and hundreds of lineal feet of stretcher bar material he provided to students over his many years of service at Salt Lake City’s Granite Park Junior High School.
The stretcher bars were only one element of the process. Salvaged army canvass and seemingly bullet proof lacquer used as primer and gesso were also available at no cost for the students to use. Cutting the stretcher bars, stretching the canvass and priming the canvass are fundamentals I still enjoy today.
The basics and more advanced technical aspects of the oil painting process I learned were not all regimented or structured lessons. The fun and enjoyable aspects of the creative process were also identified and practiced and shared. Weather permitting outdoor painting and drawing was encouraged. Frank was always detailing out the roads and byways traveled to paint outdoors.

The aspect of art that is the focus of the Wasatch art blog is that of sharing and learning the enjoyment of the creative process. Ultimately a great art education is a combination of knowledge of technical skills that an artist can employ in different ways through the creative process. Most of all though enjoying the process, socializing working and exchanging ideas with other artists all come together in different ways at different times to make for great art experiences.
For more information and to learn how I personally use art as outdoor recreation please visit my blog:
http://easelbrushbus.blogspot.com Kenneth Lundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15065932479169200625noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4637834131536596354.post-519824373951903752009-08-27T12:24:00.000-07:002009-08-27T13:04:49.200-07:00Keeping a sketchbook The epitome of (recreational) simplicityKeeping a sketchbook
The epitome of (recreational) simplicity

One might think of a sketchbook as an artist’s tool witch it is, but a sketchbook and the use and development thereof is a tool that can be used by all individuals, artists and non artists alike. And used and enjoyed by Individuals of all ages.

When discussing art with non artists I continually hear “I can’t draw,” or “I am a terrible artist.”
Good news, For the purpose of keeping a sketchbook it does not matter. Keeping a sketchbook is your own personal and private book. The benefit and enjoyment of creating a sketchbook comes through simply enjoying the creative process.
Sketchbooks are used for recording and developing ideas. You can put down your ideas before you forget them and come back to further develop them. While my focus will be on the visual development of the sketchbook I combine both visual elements as well as text notes to record ideas before forgotten and to serve as a reference for further development.

So how and why do I use a sketchbook and consider it a part of my recreation?
First I like to clarify my favorite definition of recreation: recreation - an activity that diverts or amuses or stimulates.
Quite simply sketching allows and enables me to really pause, stop and stand still. Whether for a few minutes of time out taken during a busy day or as the focus of a day’s recreation. Sketching allows me to really cut out all distractions and really focus on the joy of visual creation. It is also an opportunity to take a moment to stop and think and to explore thoughts and ideas. I am amazed how looking at sketches made a seemingly long time ago takes me back to the moment the sketch was made with amazing clarity.
Considering the fast paced lifestyle many of us are faced with and the complexities of living with and coping with the most profound socioeconomic recession in years quiet uncomplicated moments spent sketching can be considered a luxury.

Sketchbooks are about as basic as it gets. The benefits of maintaining a sketchbook and the impact it can have on your own creative process are profound. Keeping a sketchbook will make artists better artists. But anyone keeping a sketchbook will become a better thinker.
The late Frank Erickson one of my first great instructors in the fine arts often said “you never really see anything until you paint it” over the past 40 years I have continually found that to be true. Creating images to communicate entertain and inform opens up thoughts and ideas that might not adequately be represented by words or pictures alone. Combining both words and pictures communicates in an interestingly complete way. Drawings really become a language by themselves.
I think drawing is an important way to understand what you see; it definitely changes your perception of the world and the environment around you.

The classes I instruct focus on enjoyment of the creative process and enjoyment of the experiences gained sketching on location. As one practices sketching proficiency in the technical aspects of drawing and draftsmanship will be realized.

Throughout this blog I will present demonstrations of the tools and techniques I use. Please also reference my blog http://easelbrushbus.blogspot.com for more examples of sketchbook projects.Kenneth Lundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15065932479169200625noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4637834131536596354.post-37134290668488544642009-07-24T09:23:00.000-07:002009-07-24T10:26:38.735-07:00The State of the ArtsJuly, 09
The State of the Arts

With the recession crisis still looming and taking a heavy toll on government and non government budgets, art programs are seeing significant cuts in funding.
Art museums, performing arts organizations, gallery’s selling visual arts crafts and sculpture and the individual artists creating the art pieces to be sold are all experiencing the financial crunch.

Often times art budgets are subject to deep cuts with arts music and humanities programs being viewed more as luxury than necessity and cut first.

Throughout postings to this blog I will include references to the crutial and healthy social and educational benefits of the arts.

The good news is that amidst the socioeconomic crisis affecting cultures world wide their has never been a more important time to become involved with the arts. The opportunities for doing so are simple, cost little or nothing and can provide life long benefits. I invite you to follow this blog and also my other blog “An Easel a Brush and the Bus”, an example of how I am using art for low cost outdoor recreation.
http://easelbrushbus.blogspot.com/

The fundamental behind my teachings and the purpose of this blog is to exemplify the benefits of participating in the arts. My focus is on guiding individuals in pursuing creating art as a life enriching activity.

A considerable amount of energy will be directed to helping non artists in becoming familiar with the visual arts. And the enjoyable and beneficial social aspects of working with other artists.

The classes I teach are open work sessions that include artists with varying skill levels and abilities. The emphasis is on the enjoyment of the creative process.
A variety of mediums are demonstrated and used to assist students with developing creative and technical skills.Kenneth Lundhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15065932479169200625noreply@blogger.com0
