STEM-STEAM-STREAM
The beginning
As I prepare projects to teach incorporating STEM-STEAM-STREAM principals I first think it is necessary to review each STEM-STEAM-STREAM initiative.
Starting with STEM, science, technology, engineering, and math—subjects collectively known as STEM.
The federal government and industry identified the STEM skills as being primary components in the job skills necessary to compete in a rapidly changing world where technology is moving at an accelerated pace.
As stated by President Barack Obama, March 23, 2015 “[Science] is more than a school subject, or the periodic table, or the properties of waves. It is an approach to the world, a critical way to understand and explore and engage with the world, and then have the capacity to change that world...", so a large focus in the public education system is to prepare students to be candidates for future employment needs
STEAM
STEM + Art = STEAM
Innovation remains tightly coupled with Science, Technology, Engineering and Math – the STEM subjects. Art + Design are poised to transform our economy in the 21st century just as science and technology did in the last century.
We need to add Art + Design to the equation — to transform STEM into STEAM.
Art and design skills are a critical element to creating innovation.
STREAM
STEM to STEAM to STREAM :adds wRiting as an Essential Component of the whole educational equation. standing for Science, Technology, Reading, Engineering, Arts and Math.
Communication, Writing mastery is essential to STEM learning and innovating. The level of writing goes well beyond the ability to crank out one sentence texts. The ability to communicate in depth such as writing a white paper to support science,technology engineering mathematics marketing or any subject or interest is an essential skill.
Reading and writing are our fundamental means of communication
Reading must be in the forefront of every educator’s mind.

Why am I doing this project,
Often heard throughout my life have been the words by generally older individuals who had experienced many things were the words" boy if I knew then what I know now…"I would have done such and such differently.
When thinking about this question I knew instantly what I would have done. I know without a shadow of doubt what I would do now and what I would recommend anyone else to do.
In my case the opportunities available to one today are much different that not so few of years ago. The technology today especially the internet is profound. Profound because it provides an opportunity for an individual to create a global presence to communicate one's interests skills and offerings. Profound because some of the most valuable resources are totally FREE.
My primary message is that regardless of your life choice in providing for yourself and family, be that of an employee or as a self employed individual is to establish mastery of your skills and create a global web presence to communicate to the world your mastery and how to monetize those skills and abilities.
Throughout my blog and free workshops I will share how to learn to master your skills and communicate those talents to others. The free workshops will include the key concepts I include in my personal one on one entrepreneurial mentoring.
Being an artist and entrepreneur One of the first hands on activities I teach is the art of visual thinking and writing a story.
To begin I encourage students to keep a sketchbook. Taking it wherever they go and keeping it with them at all times. Taking just a few minutes to make a sketch promotes creative thinking. It also is a good way to relax a bit and disconnect from the challenges of the day.
As one works with their sketchbook development then students are encouraged to makeup stories and make illustrations to represent them. The stories can be either fictional or non fictional. The thought is this, Every professional produced movie you see has been developed with a script and a story board. Even documentaries are created with a purpose and sense of direction. This skill is more than a fun learning exercise. You need and will use these skills almost immediately as you create videos of your mastery of skills to present to the world. I cannot tell you how lacking these basic skills are. As I watch many YouTube videos, many how to, videos even ones well videoed do not provide a good presentation of the goal to be accomplished with supporting material to a logical conclusion.
The next project I teach is one that combines many of the skills needed to be successful at almost anything. The project teaches the core STREAM fundamentals.
The project is a Marionette. This project requires the creative thinking to develop a story and a message to be presented by the character. It combines many processes to design and build the marionette. It requires many different types of materials to be used and combined to make a finished product. Students will video there presentation and present on social media channels.
I have several marionettes in progress and will start uploading photos on my blog.
